Urban Analytics Framework

The UAF combines Quadstone Paramics award winning traffic microsimulation capabilities with a fully featured free space agent simulation capable of modelling pedestrians in urban traffic settings, agent movement inside transportation infrastructure such as subway stations and transport hubs or complex crowds exiting stadiums or participating in major events. The UAF allows city planners, architects and traffic engineers to understand complex interactions at the design stage prior to implementation thus improving the quality of understanding and providing a solid engineering foundation to aid the decision making process.

The UAF is first and foremost an analysis tool. It is built on solid modelling concepts and a tried and tested evaluation methodology which allows the user to clearly identify problem areas in the virtual world. This new tool is the first of its kind to consider road traffic and pedestrian interaction in an analytical sense, the first to look beyond simple visualization to try and answer the “why” question behind the cause and effect of everyday urban interactions. Understanding interactions between both sets of urban space users is the key to designing balanced environments that are efficient for both road traffic and pedestrians, safe and friendly for pedestrians to use, and environmentally sensitive.

The UAF can be used to model vehicle and agent interaction or it can be used to model each component separately with no dependency on the other.

Key application areas of the UAF include:

  • Traffic operational assessment and urban space design;
  • Footfall analysis of retail space and shopping malls;
  • Agent Level of Service and quality of environment;
  • Public Transport terminals i.e. subway or bus stations and their interaction with the road network;
  • Special event planning i.e. concerts, road closures for street parties, major sporting events;
  • Evacuation planning, evacuation time from urban spaces and complex structures;
  • Field of view or visibility analysis for both vehicles and agents; and
  • Pedestrian safety analysis

The UAF is designed to be a decision support analysis tool, its graphics front end and analytical displays have been specifically designed to perform this role. The UAF uses many industry standard Measure Of Effectiveness (MOE) criteria such as Level of Service to aid user understanding. In addition the UAF provides a high end 3D rendering engine for real time lifelike movie capture and movie storyboarding. All of the detailed agent and spatial analytics tools provided in the UAF operate at run time so there is no need for time consuming post processing of data; in the UAF all the key metrics you need are available urban analytics framework UAF, a flexible platform for all you needs whenever you need them. In addition in the UAF all the high resolution 3D graphics are driven straight from the simulation there is no need for post processing of data to produce stunning 3D visuals for public presentations.

The UAF is a easy to use desktop application that requires no dedicated training or specialist skills to use. In UAF there is no need to clean CAD files (just draw the space required using a range of easy to use paintbrush style tools) and simple to use, easy to collect and cost effective pedestrian turning movements are used in place of costly OD data. The UAF provides tools to identify, classify and optionally remove stuck agents allowing the modeller to distinguish between random noise and clusters of stuck agents indicating a model build or spatial problem in the proposed design.
