Point Clouds

Point Clouds are a major part of the general 2011 release. They allow us to use data from LIDAR scanning. Import and visualize point cloud information; stylize point data based on LAS classifications, RGB, elevation, and intensity; and use data to create surfaces, perform site surveys, and digitize as-built features for civil engineering design projects.

The danger with Point Clouds is that the survey picks up trees, buildings etc as well as the ground surface and if care is not taken, when the contours are formed, they will incorporate the elevations etc from these.

The 3 steps above show how the layer controls can be used to freeze off the points that should not be included in the DTM so that the contours will be formed properly.

Superelevation to Australia/New Zealand Standards..

The new superelevation feature in Civil 3D 2011 is groundbreaking and to help harness it, there are 3 separate XML files in the Country Kit:

The 2 Austroads files are table based and the Transit NZ file is formula based.

Corridor Editing Enhancements

In previous versions of Civil 3D, edits to corridor models were only available through the Corridor Properties - the 2011 release allows edits from the plan view through the Ribbon.

Some of the Key New options are:

• Match Parameters
• Edit Frequency
• Add Baseline
• Edit Targets

This enables us to go about corridor modeling in a different way so the Tool Palettes in the ANZ Country Kit have been updated to take advantage of this.

The layout of the subassemblies has been improved to make the relevant option more accessible as well as adding some detault options for Slope Batters and some generic links.

Also, the Sample Assemblies now include Kerbs (with or without Footpaths) and Batters. Using the new "Add Baseline" option from the ribbon, we can specify different assemblies for different ranges of the road in a more flexible way that is far easier to access.

This is applicable to both reconstruction work and green field design as there are always variations in the cross sections...

As long as you start the software with the correct icon, all the content for Australia and New Zealand will be available..
